About the Book

Grit & Granite is Katherine Johnson’s first novel. It is a fictionalized account of real-life events that pitted her father and his partner against one of the largest US corporations. This story focuses on a small town lawyer, Colin Ford, and his relationship with a millionaire philanthropist and his wife, Alex and Evelyn Hughes. Colin finally escapes the confines of small town law to work for Alex Hughes, a multimillionaire who wants to spend his fortune on helping people. But before he even starts his new job, Alex dies and now Colin must fight to protect Alex’s legacy and Evelyn’s rightful inheritance.

Colin soon realizes that controlling millions of dollars is even more important to some than loyalty or honor. Alex’s long-term business partner, Robert McIntyre, is not content to control the company H*M, nor his own billionaire fortune. To Robert, money is never enough to satisfy him. He wants control. So he starts on his own personal scheme to defraud and cheat Evelyn out of her fortune and more importantly, to steal away her controlling interest in H*M International.

But throughout the novel, Colin is also fighting another battle- one in his own home. His wife, Ruth, has to give up her dreams of an idyllic life in Rock Valley for Colin. . And her resentment builds throughout the story. Will she ever forgive Colin for destroying her dreams to follow his?

Colin is torn. Can he save the foundation, or can he rebuild his family? This dilemma will keep readers turning the pages as they dig deeper into the rich characters Johnson has created. The story is a page-turner, as it describes Colin’s challenges with love, family, greed and control.

Our Testimonials

“Just finished reading Grit & Granite this morning. Congratulations, it was a great read. I particularly enjoyed your character development. I think Colin Ford was my favorite character. Is Rock Valley a real town? JW, Florida

I finished Grit and Granite a couple weeks ago, and really enjoyed it. I loved the fresh and interesting subject matter. Wrangling over ownership and direction of a company/foundation is very unique. Characters were good, and I didn’t have any trouble getting through it quickly. That is a good test, I think, if it reads quick, there must be something good about it.  JB - Colorado

Once I got to the trial, I couldn't put it down. Well done, Katherine.  TL - Wisconsin

The story is EPIC. I can see why you choose to make it a work of “fiction”.  JW, Florida

KJ-Finally got to read your book on flights to NOLA. Finished the whole book on way. Really enjoyed it. Very well written and  kept my full attention from first page to last page.  Congrats.  I kept wondering if the main character was your Dad!  CS, Saint Simon's Island, Georgia
